10 Sculptures created by MCRC artist Monica Naymar were on display at Xavier University Art Gallery from July 7 to July 31, 2022. Each sculpture artistically addresses how each of the racial categories (such as Asian, Black and White) we use today to identify ourselves were born out of a signature trauma—a trauma that the category carries today. The art also considers the response that each category had made to find some relief.

Up close look at three of the eight sculptures

The Hispanic or latino category

Signature Trauma: Being Walled Out

The Response: “We will not be treated like another non-White race.”

The asian category

Signature Trauma: Estrangement

The Response: “We are Americans! Do you want us or not? We can’t tell.”

The white category

Signature Trauma: Void and Emptiness

The Response: “I’ll do whatever I have to do to escape oppression” / “I will keep to myself when it comes to race”
